What do you think is the main contributor to a low quality of life in countries? According to research, it is poverty. Quality of life is determined by the three L’s - life expectancy, literacy and living standard. Poverty affects life expectancy because due to poverty there will be lack of accesses to essentials of living which may lead to diseases and death. Literacy is affected because of poverty, which means that there will be lack of education because schooling can’t be afforded. Poverty also affects living standard because if people are lacking money then they can’t afford fundamental services and goods which brings the country’s living standard down. Let’s take Bangladesh for an example, keeping in mind that the poverty rate in Bangladesh is 31.5% (source). The life expectancy is estimated to be 70 years which is a medium life expectancy (source). This is probably because the government doesn't expend much after health expenditures and there aren't enough physicians and hospital beds for citizens sick with major infectious diseases. The literacy rate in Bangladesh is 57.7% (source) which is definitely low. The school life expectancy in Bangladesh is expected to be around 10 years, probably because there is 13% of child labour in the country. Finally, the living standard of Bangladesh is also low because the GDP may be $324.6 billion but the GDP per capita is only $2,100 (source). If we can end poverty in the future, hopefully the quality of life in countries will develop.
